d**n! A Concussion. How hard did you get smacked? Sorry to hear that Lucha. I hate it when I get hurt for no reason in class. And my no-reason I mean when it is my dumbass fault.

Thanks, gp. It was REALLY hard. I'm just really annoyed because it was something that could have been avoided. Not afraid of being injured when rolling or if I were in a competition, it happens. All the time. But during a drill...come on. Totally unnecessary.

After talking with a friend today, I thought this thread might be due for a revisit...

Man, so much has changed since this thread. since this thread started, Shawn actually taught a 'no arm triangle' that doesn't involve smelly crotches, I (like a huge hypocrite) have turned down an upper rank because I was tired. (I still think that was wrong of me) and the other day I was S training with Lucha on take downs and I totally grabbed her butt instead of the belt (I swear I was aiming for the belt, I still feel guilty).
And most importantly, I miss angry guest....and now I really think he was serious and I think know who he is.
anyway, nice to reminisce, but seriously, why did you want to bring up this thread?

Hahaha...hilarious! Don't feel guilty, I didn't even notice, and I'm pretty sure I grab...stuff...all the time. We all just keep quiet and pretend it never happened I brought it up, because an HBJJ buddy was telling me about a fairly newer student who makes several of the faux pas mentioned at the start of this thread. We have a lot of new students all the time, and I think it's always good to be aware of the basics. Plus, it's one of the funnier threads and I kinda needed a good laugh ;D

I don't agree with these rules. I will not abide by them. Wow, it's been so long I had to read what the rules were. anyway, you don't have to follow them if you don't want to. I'll be sure to put my smelly crotch in your face the next time we roll.

If I'm exhausted and I can't roll, then I can't roll, sorry. I'm not going to force my body to roll with someone just because they are a higher belt than me.
If two white belts are on one side of the mat and then two purple belts are on the other side of the mat and the purples roll all the way over to where the white belts are and the white belts haven't moved much from their origianl position then the purples should not expect them to move, and the white belts shouldn't have to. That would be ridiculous. It's just common courtesy.
Crotch in the face rule: this one I like, especially if it comes from blind.

Red you are showing signs of feebleness with your latest response. If you are too tired to roll, do it anyway and the higher belt will go easier on you. Their goal is not to hurt you. That is how you get tougher, forcing your cardio. Also, if two purple belts are rolling on Santa Monica Blvd, and happen to roll into the academy where two white belts are rolling, they still have right of way on the mat. Thats just the way it goes. Your respect will be taken should you choose not to heed to higher belts.

Look, Sweet, this ain't your grandfather's jiu jitsu, okay? This is 2008, things change. If a higher belt asks me to roll and I'm out of gas I will respectfully decline, unless it is an instructor. If they have a problem with that then they can exhile me from the academy. As far as going easy on me, I've heard that before and then had a submission held on me just enough to where I don't have to tap but am in extreme discomfort. Ever done that before, Sweet? I'll pass.

Not according to Shawn Williams when I asked him last Friday.

Have I ever held a submission on someone?? Yes! That is BJJ and what I signed up for. No one should ever want to hurt someone, but discomfort is part of the game. Thats how you learn to escape. As far as declining a roll, I dont see a big problem there. Sometimes youre out of gas, but its good to push yourself anyway. But getting out of the way of higher belts is just how it goes in any academy. I hear they let you roll wherever you want over here www.barrysbootcamp.com/

red, i see it more as a suggestion or guideline than a rule
you don't have to roll with anyone or do anything, thats obvious, the rule is trying to instill the idea of pushing yourself beyond your limits when you are exhausted
